Dodgers ‘very optimistic’ Corey Seager will return from back injury to play in World Series

first_img“We’re just trying to get him as healthy as we can and with the training staff we’ll make that decision. But, yeah, if he can swing the bat and isn’t compromised physically, that makes sense.”ALSORoberts said the Dodgers were waiting on the outcome of the ALCS before deciding whether Rich Hill or Yu Darvish will start Game 2 of the World Series with the other pitcher going in Game 3. He received an epidural injection the next day (Oct. 10) and eased into workouts last week.According to Roberts, Seager has been hitting off a tee and soft toss, taking ground balls at shortstop and running the curve of the infield in the past couple days. The next hurdle will be to face live pitching. LOS ANGELES — With two more off days left before Game 1 of the World Series, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team is “very optimistic” that Corey Seager will be ready to play.“We’re hopeful that he’ll be back for Game 1,” Roberts said Saturday as the Dodgers prepared for their first workout since eliminating the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series on Thursday. “Knowing we still have some days to make a decision, we’re certainly optimistic and Corey really doesn’t want to be denied.”Related Articles “From the training staff, everything looks good,” Roberts said. “For him obviously the biggest hurdle is we’re going to have some pitchers throwing in the next couple days, some live arms. I’m sure he’s going to get in there and take some swings.“Just to kind of simulate that game speed against an actual live pitcher will be telling.”Working in Seager’s favor is the DH rule. The middle three games (if necessary) of the World Series will be played in the American League park. If Seager is not fully recovered (as seems likely), the Dodgers could limit his workload by starting him at DH for those games. Regardless, it seems likely the Dodgers will keep Charlie Culberson on their World Series roster to guard against any limitations for Seager. Culberson, who spent most of the year in Triple-A before joining the Dodgers as a September call-up, started three of the five NLCS games and went 5 for 18 with two doubles and a triple. But Roberts pointed out Seager first felt the injury on a slide while running the bases, not playing in the field.“I think if Corey is able to swing the bat that’s obviously a huge benefit to us, having potentially three games in an AL ballpark,” Roberts agreed. “But right now … we don’t know if it’s standing in the infield, taking ground balls, bending over versus taking swings – which more affects him.
