Boys tennis Lakers go through trio of close matches

first_imgWhen the Cazenovia boys team challenged Christian Brothers Academy last Monday afternoon, it dealt with someone quite familiar to local high school sports fans. The Lakers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Brothers, which was the 450th win for CBA head coach Tom Daviau –the same coach who led Chittenango to a pair of boys soccer state championships in 1994 and 2001.Both of Cazenovia’s points came in doubles, where Teddy Coughlin and Liam Flannery won, 6-1, 6-1, over Michael Hill and Ayo Oguntola, while Dan Gavilondo and Teddy Williams pulled out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision over Hunter Burton and  Max Lewis. When the Lakers faced Mexico on Thursday afternoon, it once again ended 3-2, but in favor of the Tigers, who limited Kalteski, Cherciu and Monroe to three total games in six sets of singles play.Cazenovia did win both doubles matches, though, Gavilondo and Williams overcoming a slow start to stop Wes Clark and Matt Shaw 3-6, 7-5, 10-8, while Coughlin and Flannery had an easier time topping Jacob Hill and Connor Shaffer 6-0, 6-1.Chittenango had its own close match with Fulton last Monday afternoon, but one singles point, allowed the Bears to beat the Red Raiders 4-3.Of the four doubles matches, three went to Chittenango, including Andrew Albach and Josh Boulter going to three sets to beat David Cordone and Reid Devendorf 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.Evan Edwards and Anthony Roberts lost in straight sets, but Devon Hardy and Brian Schermerhorn won, 6-3, 6-1, over Jon Simpson and Steven Thompson, with Luke Dahlin and Artie Paul handling Ryan Nichols and Kieran O’Hanlon 6-1, 6-1.Up in singles, it took David Seale’s 7-5, 7-6 win over Sidney Bradshaw to make up for close defeats elsewhere. Evan Smith lost an early lead in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Caleb Dahar as Sean Larsson did the same thing, falling to Brasen Jodway 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.Then Chittenango swept a pair of 5-0 decisions over LaFayette on Wednesday afternoon, all of them in single-set matches to 10.Edwards, Roberts and Evan Smith each won two singles matches, with Edwards going beyond the wire in one of them to beat Kayleigh Danaher 11-9. Hardy and Schermerhorn won 10-6 over Leanna Crouse and Adam McIntyre as they also went 2-0, with Seale and Nate Smith also winning twice. Two more matches followed on Thursday against Onondaga, Chittenango splitting those contests as the Bears beat the Tigers 5-0 in one portion, but lost 4-1 in the other portion. These single-set matches went to eight games, though in the win Edwards had to go longer to bet Jake Massaro 9-7 as Roberts beat Adam Wood 8-2 and Larsson won 8-6 over Jon Massaro.Seale and Nate Smith beat Sophia Featherstone and Paul Okhman 8-2, with Hardy and Schermerhorn topping Michaela Germain and Nate Hay by that same score. In the OCS victory, the lone point came from Schermerhorn pairing with Kaiden George for an 8-1 win over Okhman and Lauren Moore. Nate Smith, in singles, lost 9-7 to Jake Massaro.Share this:FacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditComment on this Story Tags: Boys tennisCazenoviaChittenangocenter_img Up in singles, though, it was all CBA, with Aiden Kalteski getting just one game against Dean Vlassis in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat, while C.J. Monroe and Andrew Peterson had 6-0, 6-0 losses to, respectively, Ben Vlassis and Shivam Nanavati. In another close battle on Wednesday afternoon, Cazenovia prevailed 3-2 over Manlius-Pebble Hill, the key point earned in second singles when Traian Cherciu rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over the Trojans’ Charlie Mann.Flannery won over Anthony Pitts 6-3, 6-1, while Kalteski lost to Dan Braverman 6-2, 6-0. Coughlin and  Monroe paired in doubles to rout Evan Cook and Matt Roberson 6-1, 6-1 as Gavilondo and Williams lost a 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) battle to Casey Beach and Harry Xu.last_img read more
