Human Body – You Smell Like a Dog: Bloodhounds, we know, are good at telling the direction of a scent, but it turns out that humans have that ability, too. Researchers at UC Berkeley did experiments with human subjects to see if they could tell which direction a scent came from. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to monitor their brain activity. The subjects were able to tell which nostril found the scent, especially when they sniffed. This means that the brain can judge time of arrival – as with hearing – to sense the direction of a source. With practice, the researchers believe, we could get pretty good at it. Personal biases, wish fulfillment, bad sampling, poor technique, conflict of interest and other biases combine to make most research findings false. Source: New Scientist. But how do we know that conclusion is true?Origin of Life – Light May Favor Left Hands: Radiation from space might preferentially destroy one form of chiral molecules like amino acids, say researchers. If amino acids were ferried to the early earth on icy dust, this may have favored one hand over the other. But the experiments with circularly polarized light on one amino acid – leucine – produced an excess of only 2.6% – far less than the 100% purity required for life (see online book). Source: New Scientist.Theology – Catholic Statement Worries Darwinists: A letter from four Austrian scientists to Science Aug. 26 expressed dismay that a Viennese Cardinal said, “evolution in the neo-Darwinian sense is not true” and that there is “overwhelming evidence for design in biology.” They called this a political move toward dogmatism and fundamentalism reminiscent of the Galileo affair.Early Man – Another Dmanisi Skull: Another skull has been found in the republic of Georgia near Tblisi. This one was in the best condition of the other five that had been found earlier. The bones, a “million years older than any widely accepted pre-human remains in Europe, have provided additional evidence that Homo erectus left Africa a half-million years or more earlier than scientists had previously thought.” That’s a lot of time for this human group to have done more than scratch, wouldn’t one think? Source: LiveScience.com.Amazing Birds – Chickens Have Magnetic Compass: Chickens are not so dumb; they have magnetic radar. Two articles on EurekAlert (EurekAlert 1, EurekAlert 2) about experiments on birds with magnets and light suggest that “birds’ orientation abilities may be more complex than previously thought and that birds may be able to interpret magnetic signals by more than one mechanism.” See also Current Biology Volume 15, Issue 16, 23 August 2005, Pages R620-R621.Amazing Bugs – Beetles Inspire Nanotechnology: A Cornell scientist, intrigued by how beetles could adhere to leaves when threatened, decided to imitate them. The beetles are able to take advantage of surface tension by exuding “120,000 droplets of secreted oil, each making a bridgelike contact between the beetle’s feet and the leaf.” Each droplet is just a few microns wide, the report on Cornell University says, but in concert, they act like two wet pieces of paper sticking together. A beetle can cling to a palm leaf with “adhesive strengths equal to a hundred times its own body weight – the human equivalent of carrying seven cars.” Researchers are using the principle to create small, fast transistor switches.Cell Biology – Multi-Talented Telomerase: Telomerase, the enzyme that keep DNA tips (telomeres) from unraveling, apparently does more than control the aging of a cell. Science Now reports that it also regulates stem cells and spurs cell growth. It can even grow hair on mice.Darwin – What Henslow Taught Darwin: John S. Henslow, a “kindly Professor” at Cambridge and a creationist, taught Darwin how to collect plant specimens carefully and identify varieties within a species. Henslow was the one who recommended Darwin to be naturalist on the HMS Beagle. Four writers in Nature (436, 643-645, 4 August 2005, doi: 10.1038/436643a) believe that Darwin took the lessons he learned from Henslow with him on the voyage, and rather than use his data on varieties for demonstrating the stability of species, as Henslow did, began to entertain ideas of species transformation.(Visited 7 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

The data center management technology company introduced Puppet for the Enterprise this week. The software is a major advancement for the company. It reflects on the cloud management space that is growing fast in concert with the move to virtualization, the need for data center efficiencies and automatic provisioning.Puppet provides a framework for managing data centers. It can be used for operations of most any size. Users include Match.com, Red Hat, Twitter, Zynga and thousands of other customers. Puppet automates the provisioning, patching and configuration of operating system and application components across enterprise and cloud infrastructures.Puppet for the Enterprise takes much of the manual work out of integrating by hand. For years, IT managers have used scripts and images to manage networks. But these days data centers may have tens of thousands of virtual machines. Puppet for the Enterprise allows system administrators to install the framework and use it manage the network as it grows in complexity. For example, let’s say you want to start using Amazon EC2. To do that you create a template or an Amazon Machine Instance (AMI). The AMI contains your applications, libraries, data and associated configuration settings. That’s fine and well. But it can be a task to update an AMI. It has to be done manually. Puppet takes the labor out of the equation. Rebuilding an AMI does not have to be done from scratch. Instead, the AMI becomes a base server with Puppert running on top of it. Puppet keeps the AMI updated with the correct configurations. As a result, scaling can be done far easier than if an AMI was rebuilt in the traditional manner.Puppet for the Enterprise is the paid version of the open-source framework. It is available via download. You can try a version at no cost. The original Puppet will continue to be free and open source. Puppet competes with services such as Opscode, which also provides cloud management technology.Rooflabs provides a decent overview of the two companies:
A special CBI court on Thursday sentenced three brothers to life in prison for killing a 17-year-old girl five years ago. Special Judge Vinayak Singh also imposed a fine of ₹1.30 lakh each on the convicts – Rohtash, Sunil and Lalit – after holding them guilty under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were directed to pay ₹1.50 lakh and ₹50,000 to the girl’s parents Suresh Pal and Anita, respectively. Public prosecutor Darshan Singh said due to a land dispute, the assailants barged into the girl’s house in Muthber village under the Bhorakala police station and attacked her parents in March 2014. As the assailants fired upon her parents, the girl came in between and sustained gunshot injuries. Later, she succumbed to her injuries, said Singh. Initially, Rohtash, who was also allegedly involved in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, had managed to evade arrest. Another suspect, Praveen, was given a clean chit during the investigation.
Rodri says workload hitting Man City campaignby Paul Vegas13 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester City midfielder Rodri says their workload is hitting their campaign.Pep Guardiola is aiming to win his third league title in a row with the Blues, but City have made their worst start to a league campaign since he took charge of the club in 2016. Asked to explain their losses in the league, he told ESPN: “I won my first title as soon as I arrived [Community Shield], so that [start] was good.”I think people have to be aware that there is a lot happening: we have had a lot of players out, it is difficult because we play every three days in three competitions and we are playing with more or less the same players.”What’s done is done.”We have to realise that we are doing things wrong, and we have to fix it. We have to be calm: it’s the start of the season, we have recognised that we have had our problems, and we improve.”Also, in football there are many things you can’t control. JT Barrett Circle DrillToday was Student Appreciation Day at Ohio State, and as you can imagine, the turnout at Buckeye spring practice was strong. Fans usually love seeing players participate in the “Circle Drill,” but don’t often end up getting involved themselves. Quarterbacks are always excluded from the action as well, so naturally today saw an OSU QB and a young fan face off in the circle.Lori Schmidt of Columbus’ 97.1 The Fan has the video of J.T. Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a slum in Kidderpore on Thursday afternoon. The fire was controlled after almost an hour. No injury reported. According to sources, on Thursday, around 1 pm, the fire broke out at a temporary shanty at a slum in Kantapukur located on Bhukailash Road. Fire brigade was informed immediately and 10 fire tenders were pressed into action in phases. Before a single fire tender could reach, fire started spreading due to high wind. Also, the shanties in the slum were filled with inflammable materials. Around 2 pm, the fire was controlled. The cooling process of the gutted area went on till the evening. State Fire minister Sujit Bose and Director General of state Fire and Emergency Services Department, Jag Mohan went to the spot and supervised the work. Some local residents alleged that fire brigade reached a bit late due to which the fire started spreading in other shanties. However, fire brigade officials denied the allegation and stated that they were facing trouble entering the area as the roads were narrow. As the area was congested, firefighters faced problems. It is suspected that the fire had broken out due to short circuit as water seeped into electrical wires.

NEW DELHI: A week before the Lok Sabha election in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday took the poll battle to unite the trader community of Delhi. “You have always voted for the BJP but this time I will urge traders to be with us and I promise that I will fight for your causes in every possible way. Modi’s nationalism is fake and do not fall in this trap again” said CM Kejriwal.A large number of Delhi voters belong to the trader community and this has always been a strong voter base of the BJP. However, from the ground reports due to the effect of sealing drive, the community faced troubles with their business. Also Read – Odd-Even: CM seeks transport dept’s views on exemption to women, two wheelers, CNG vehiclesThe BJP, which used to be traders’ party, has “broken the backbone” of the community, he alleged, adding thousands of notices are being sent to traders and all this is being done with the intention of “extorting” money from them. “The Modi government has unleashed ‘tax terrorism’ on traders,” CM Kejriwal said. “The policies of the Modi government have ruined traders. In a single stroke, demonetisation brought endless miseries to traders. When the traders’ community had barely recovered from this rude shock, the Modi government hastily brought in the GST, which nobody could understand since it was implemented without any proper planning,” he alleged. After note ban, the next jolt came in the form of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) which led to the closure of many shops and factories, causing loss of numerous jobs and heaped miseries on traders, the AAP leader claimed, adding under the Modi government, the traders’ community is feeling “orphaned”. Referring to the violence in Mayapuri on April 13, Kejriwal claimed that the AAP intervened and stopped sealing drive. “Give all the seven Lok Sabha seats (of Delhi) to us, I will ensure that there is no sealing in the national capital. You (traders) strengthen our hands, we will ensure justice,” he said. Around 14 officials were injured after clashes broke out between the security personnel and scrap dealers during the sealing drive in Mayapuri on April 13.

He ranks eighth all-time in home runs, seventh in extra-base hits and 10th in total bases. At his peak, he won three MVP awards and was also the best position player in baseball — according to wins above replacement (WAR)1Taking the average of Baseball-Reference.com’s and FanGraphs.com’s versions of WAR. — three times (in 2006, 2008 and 2009). Pujols’s resume makes him a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer. But this season, a new title can be assigned to Pujols: He’s the worst player in baseball.Pujols has flat-out stunk up Angel Stadium. He’s hitting .230 (79 points below his previous career average) with an on-base plus slugging 26 percent worse than league average. Even in an age of ineffective designated hitters, Pujols has easily been the worst hitter at the position that provides the least defensive value (i.e., zero value). As a result, no player has been less valuable than Pujols this year: His -1.99 WAR ranks dead last among all players (including pitchers). If he finishes the season in last place — which seems quite possible, as L.A. continues to pencil him into its starting lineup, day after day, despite his poor numbers — Pujols will become the first modern2Since MLB’s two-league era began in 1901. position player ever to be both baseball’s best and worst player at various points in his career. The worst finish by a former No. 1 player previously belonged to the delightfully named New York Yankees second baseman Snuffy Stirnweiss. Snuffy was baseball’s top position player in 1945, when many of the league’s best (such as Ted Williams, Stan Musial and Joe DiMaggio) were serving in the military. But he was also the league’s second-worst player in 1950, a miserable season that saw him hit .216 and get traded from the 98-win Yankees to the 58-win St. Louis Browns. Here are the worst finishes by WAR for position players who were also the best in baseball at some point in their career: From the penthouse to the outhouseWorst ranks (from the bottom of MLB) in wins above replacement for players who were best in the league for at least one season, 1901–2017 Bill McKechnie1913321914 WORST SEASON PLAYERNO. 1 SEASONSINV. That’s especially true for the Angels, who are a single game in back of the Minnesota Twins for the American League’s final wild-card berth and fighting for their postseason lives. But in a funny way, Pujols’ last-place ranking this year is also a kind of testament to how good he’s been over the course of his long, storied career. The bottom of the WAR leaderboard provides a good lesson in the difference between “ability” and “value”. Ability-wise, Pujols isn’t actually MLB’s worst baseball player — that distinction would probably go to a fringe player who was called up at midseason and rarely plays — but he has been its least valuable, in no small part because of the ample opportunities he’s received.3Pujols is third on the team in plate appearances. Simply being bad isn’t enough; in order to even get the chance to finish last in WAR, a player needs to have earned the confidence from management to let him play through a prolonged slump. That’s why, even though no former No. 1 player has sunk as low as Pujols this season, the list of league-worst players by WAR includes plenty of guys who were, at one point, extremely good at baseball. Most notably, the worst player in 1983 was the all-time hit king, Pete Rose, who — unlike Pujols — was eventually benched by the Phillies because of his poor play. Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, the second-worst player this season, ranked as high as No. 15 in 2010. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez fell from 10th-best in 2009 all the way to sixth-worst this season. And Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays, who clocks in as baseball’s 26th-worst player by WAR this year, ranked third-best as recently as 2011. It takes a great reputation to be afforded such a bad season.Since signing a massive contract with the Angels before the 2012 season, Pujols has had a few solid renaissance seasons, and he was an above-average hitter as recently as last season. So it wasn’t unreasonable for the Angels to expect him to eventually snap out of his funk at some point this season. And he may well end up with 100 runs batted in despite the poor sabermetric numbers — though it would be one of the least valuable 100-RBI seasons ever. Either way, he’s just the most glaring example of a phenomenon that probably won’t go away anytime soon. As long as there are managers dreaming of a turnaround — and ones who lack any better options4Pujols’ contract, which will pay him another $28.5 million per year for the next four seasons, may also play a role. — once-great players like Pujols will always get the chance to play themselves to the bottom of the WAR charts.
