UN chief: Time for national plans to help fund global COVID-19 vaccine effort

first_imgGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged $100 million to GAVI to help poorer countries gain access to a vaccine and Johnson & Johnson Chief Executive Alex Gorsky committed 500 million vaccine doses for low-income countries with delivery starting in mid-2021.”Having access to lifesaving COVID diagnostics, therapeutics or vaccines … shouldn’t depend on where you live, whether you’re rich or poor,” said Gorsky, adding that while Johnson & Johnson is “acting at an unprecedented scale and speed, but we are not for a minute cutting corners on safety.”US President Donald Trump has said that a vaccine against the virus might be ready before the Nov. 3 US presidential election, raising questions about whether political pressure might result in the deployment of a vaccine before it is safe.”We remain 100 percent committed to high ethical and scientific principles,” Gorsky said. UN chief Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday it is time for countries to start using money from their national COVID-19 response to help fund a global vaccine plan as the World Bank warned that “broad, rapid and affordable access” to those doses will be at the core of a resilient global economic recovery. The Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator and its COVAX facility – led by the World Health Organization and GAVI vaccine alliance – has received $3 billion, but needs another $35 billion. It aims to deliver 2 billion vaccine doses by the end of 2021, 245 million treatments and 500 million tests. At a high-level virtual UN event on the program, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the financing gap was less than 1% of what the world’s 20 largest economies (G20) had committed to domestic stimulus packages and “it’s roughly equivalent to what the world spends on cigarettes every two weeks.” GAVI Chief Executive Seth Berkley said that so far 168 countries, including 76 self-financing states, have joined the COVAX global vaccines facility. Tedros said this represented 70% of the world’s population, adding: “The list is growing every day.”China, Russia and the United States have not joined the facility, although WHO officials have said they are still holding talks with China about signing up. The United States has reached its own deals with vaccine developers.’Long haul’World Bank President David Malpass said the pandemic could push 150 million people into extreme poverty by 2021 and the “negative impact on human capital will be deep and may last decades.””Broad, rapid and affordable access to COVID vaccines will be at the core of a resilient global economic recovery that lifts everyone,” he said.Guterres said that the ACT-Accelerator was the only safe and certain way to reopen the global economy quickly. But he warned that the program needed an immediate injection of $15 billion to “avoid losing the window of opportunity” for advance purchase and production, to build stocks in parallel with licensing, boost research, and help countries prepare.”We cannot allow a lag in access to further widen already vast inequalities,” Guterres said.”But let’s be clear: We will not get there with donors simply allocating resources only from the Official Development Assistance budget,” he said. “It is time for countries to draw funding from their own response and recovery programs.”UN Secretary-General Guterres called on all countries to step up significantly in the next three months.Billionaire Bill Gates told the UN event that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had signed an agreement with 16 pharmaceutical companies on Wednesday.”In this agreement the companies commit to, among other things, scaling up manufacturing, at an unprecedented speed, and making sure that approved vaccines reach broad distribution as early as possible,” Gates said.Britain’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab – a co-host of the meeting along with Guterres, the WHO and South Africa – urged other countries to join the global effort, saying the ACT-Accelerator is the best hope of bringing the pandemic under control.Said Merkel: “We’re in for the long haul and we need more support.” Topics :last_img read more

Statement from Wolf Administration on ChildLine Audit

first_imgStatement from Wolf Administration on ChildLine Audit May 24, 2016 Human Services,  Statement Harrisburg, PA – The following statement can be attributed to Jeff Sheridan, Governor Wolf’s Press Secretary:When Governor Wolf took office, his administration inherited a ChildLine program that was not being implemented properly, and was an absolute mess.Despite the law mandating that calls be responded to in 14 days, due to the high volume of calls, the total number of days reached as high as 26 days. The governor and Human Services Secretary Ted Dallas immediately went to work to fix the problem, and as a result of changes made, including new leadership to oversee the program and additional staffing and resources provided, the Wolf Administration:Reduced the number of response days from 26 to 2.Increased the number of calls responded to in a timely manner from 47 percent to 100 percent.Reduced the number of abandoned calls from 43 percent to 12 percent. The Administration is currently working to reduce this percentage to 4 percent, but additional funding is necessary. SHARE Email Facebook Twitter The Wolf Administration began fixing the implementation of the program more than a year before the Auditor General began his audit, and while many strides have been made, there is more work to do.We are committed to continuing our work with the legislature to implement the law and to finding ways to direct additional resources to ChildLine, and we are pleased the Auditor General is now involved in the process and has highlighted the need for more funding and additional staffing.Like Governor Tom Wolf on Facebook: Facebook.com/GovernorWolflast_img read more

‘Mikel trains like a 25-year-old’

first_img Loading… Trabzonspor youngster, Behlul Aydin, has praised former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel for giving everything and being a great example during his brief stint in Turkey. “Respectful career. He was a bit cold person. Always have the distance,” Aydin told Goal. “In trainings, he was still working like a 25-year-old. Giving everything. A great example for us. “As he is an important player, he might be a loss for Trabzonspor. But I’m not sad that he left, as I’m playing for Sancaktepe FK (on a half season loan) now.” After ending his stay at Chelsea in 2017, Mikel left for China where he teamed up with Tianjin Teda for two years before returning to England to join Middlesbrough in January 2019. read also:Ndidi: I was nervous when I first met Mikel He is now a free agent following his Trabzonspor exit but the 32-year-old has attracted interest from Brazilian outfit Botafogo with the midfielder confirming talks between both parties. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 The 32-year-old midfielder took his wealth of experience to the Turkish Super League last summer and instantly established himself as a key player in Huseyin Cimsir’s team. Mikel played 24 games for the Black Sea Storm across all competitions this season, before terminating his two-year deal at the club in March over the coronavirus fears. The former Super Eagles captain is best known for his 11-year stint at Chelsea where he won the Champions League, Europa League, two Premier League League titles and three FA Cups. Aydin who is currently on loan with Second Division outfit Sancaktepe FK, admitted Mikel’s exit might be a loss for Trabzonspor who sit at the summit of the Turkish top-flight table.Advertisement Promoted Content10 Extremely Dirty Seas In The WorldCrazy Expensive Things That Taylor Swift Owns6 Major TV Characters We Were Relieved To See Leaving The Show6 Extreme Facts About Hurricanes7 Truly Incredible Facts About Black HolesThe Highest Paid Football Players In The World18 Beautiful Cities That Are Tourist Magnets9 Movie Scenes That Got Re-Shot And Saved The Whole Movie8 Things That Will Happen If An Asteroid Hits Earth9 Facts You Should Know Before Getting A TattooThe Models Of Paintings Whom The Artists Were Madly In Love With6 Incredibly Strange Facts About Hurricaneslast_img read more

Villa look to make impression

first_img Only Philippe Senderos (calf) and Libor Kozak (broken leg) are unavailable for the hosts. Sherwood twice missed out on the West Brom job and was linked with QPR before they appointed Chris Ramsey – Sherwood’s own assistant at Tottenham– as manager until the end of the season. Lambert was sacked after two-and-a-half years in the role, having only signed a new four-year contract in September. Villa have won just twice in their last 21 league games and are winless in 10 matches. Chairman Randy Lerner acted after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Hull, which dropped Villa into the bottom three in the Barclays Premier League. Sherwood said: “It is a great honour to manage one of the biggest clubs in English football. “I can’t wait to get started and I’m really looking forward to the challenge.” Lerner also told the club’s official site: “While being forever conscious of the frustrations that we all suffer, we feel that a change that offers a positive, fresh approach will be very good for the club. “I know that Tom (Fox, chief executive) and many others at Villa worked very hard to recruit Tim in the face of severely limited time constraints and pounding pressure. “More importantly, I know further that internally we remain focused and committed to challenges we face, and I am deeply appreciative for that.” Press Association Former Tottenham chief Sherwood has been appointed as Paul Lambert’s successor after Villa acted quickly to replace the sacked Scot. Marshall will take the team for Sunday’s FA Cup visit of the Foxes, with Sherwood watching from the stands after signing a deal until 2018. Caretaker manager Scott Marshall insists Aston Villa will not hold back against Leicester – as incoming boss Tim Sherwood watches on. He has been charged with keeping Villa in the Barclays Premier League after they dropped into the bottom three on Tuesday. The FA Cup remains a secondary priority for the club but Marshall insists they are ready for a battle after two previous games with Leicester this season saw three red cards. Paul Konchesky was dismissed in the first game, only for the red card to be overturned, while Matty James and Ciaran Clark walked in Leicester’s 1-0 win at the King Power Stadium last month. James’ tackle on Jores Okore sparked a late scuffle between the sides in January and Marshall wants Villa to impose themselves. He said: “There’s a lot at stake – a quarter-final place – it’ll be competitive and you don’t want to take your foot out of anything. “It’s a Midlands derby, the clubs aren’t far apart and it’ll be a competitive game. “I don’t think there was much in the last one, certainly there was a bit of a gathering of the two teams but other than that there wasn’t much.” Christian Benteke could return after being on the bench for the last two games of Lambert’s reign while Ron Vlaar is fully fit after a knee problem. last_img read more

Soccer star Bobb training relentlessly, following safety rules as lockdown continues

first_imgBy Clifton RossNATIONAL winger, Trayon Bobb, said he’s keeping safe while staying fit during the pandemic, but admits he dearly missed playing football.Chronicle Sport caught up with the Guyanese-born Caledonia FC star, who said the ongoing state of lockdown was treating him fairly well, but he’s desperate to get back on the field.Arguably one of the best soccer players Guyana has ever produced, Bobb was adamant that his training during downtime will keep him at an optimum level as he awaits his return to action.“I’ve been exercising every day and I have also been doing my own personal workouts to ensure that I keep fit during quarantine”,said the 27-year-old left-winger.Like most athletes, Bobb has been forced into isolation due to Covid-19 for the last 3 months. From a mental standpoint, the Guyanese, who had a successful stint in Finland with a few clubs, said he was in high spirits despite the lack of game time but says his training regiment keeps him focused.“Yes, it does affect me a lot (lockdown) but I still continue to do my normal exercise on a daily basis”. He said. With safety and health being a key factor in daily living since the pandemic took effect, Bobb, who made two additional appearances for the U-20 team during its qualification attempt in the 2013 CONCACAF Championship, believed sticking to the current regulations was a key part of being an athlete during these times.“I don’t be in crowds, I tend to stick to the safety precautions, but I try to do my best to make up for the time spent away from training with my teammates”, He said.Looking to the future, with the silver lining appearing to be more visible with each passing day, and Guyana possibly set to resume action by the summer, the soccer star was adamant that he had done enough to make a solid return to the sport he loves.“Since I’m doing my normal exercises at home, I don’t think I should have that problem in terms of performance, but overall,I just really miss playing football so much”, Bobb ended.last_img read more

FUN Golf gets families playing

first_img Fun is the name of the game! That’s the promise to families who can have a whale of a time while getting into golf. Golf Kingdom in Essex is at the heart of a joint project with England Golf to highlight golf as a great game for all the generations to play together. It follows England Golf’s Family Golf Month and is attracting families to try the game by joining a three week FUN Golf Course at any time until November and enjoying Adventure Golf on the Moby Golf course. Each one-hour FUN Golf session is delivered by a PGA professional using adapted equipment, with colourful clubs and tennis-style balls.  Players can also ‘warm up’ before each session, hitting against giant targets on a large inflatable.  It’s anticipated that over 250 people will take the FUN Golf courses and they can then move on to other opportunities, including coaching with PGA professionals. It is expected there will be a good level of transition from FUN Golf to the traditional golfing game.  “It’s golf, but not as you know it!” said Scott Cranfield from Golf Kingdom at Chadwell Heath, Essex. “Golf is a terrific game for all the family and we encourage lots of laughter. There’s no stuffiness here!”  England Golf is also working with Golf Kingdom to help them understand their customers and potential customers. This information is being used to shape publicity for the campaign on social media and with other promotional material. England Golf and Golf Kingdom will also survey Moby Golf and FUN Golf customers to find out more about what families want from golf and what they see as barriers to participation. Claire Hodgson, England Golf’s Head of Participation, said: “It’s great to be able to show families that golf is a game which all the generations can enjoy together. We’re delighted to be working with Golf Kingdom and look forward to sharing the results of this project to help other clubs and golf centres to attract more families.” Kate Cooper, Managing Director at Golf Kingdom, added: “The feedback so far from people who have taken part in our FUN Golf course has been very positive.  Many have said that it is a great introduction into a sport that they have never played before. We have had many family situations, where mum and dad have both enjoyed playing alongside their children.  We’re looking forward to many more taking part.” To find out how to join a FUN Golf course and to watch FUN Golf in action visit www.golfkingdom.net/fun/course 8 Aug 2016 FUN Golf gets families playing last_img read more

Steelers enter toughest part of schedule

first_imgAIR ATTACK – Ben Roethlisberger getting plenty of protection as he throws the ball. His stats are impressive but his production in the Red Zone has been very poor.  (Photo by Julio Torres for New Pittsburgh Courier)After going down in defeat to the previously lowly Cleveland Browns, 31-10, now the Steelers must face three of the roughest teams in the NFL in the Houston Texans, 3-3, the Indianapolis Colts, 4-2 and the Baltimore Ravens, 4-2.If the Steelers don’t find a way to improve their offense and defense, they just may find themselves setting at the bottom of the tough AFC North at 3-6.They face the Texans this coming Monday Oct. 20 on ESPN Monday Night Football.Even though the Texans have some great offensive weapons in wide receiver Andre Johnson who is considered to be one of the best in the league and running back Arian Foster, who is also one of the best in the league they are questionable at quarterback.Ryan Fitzpatrick still hasn’t proven he can play with the big boys, having come from the Buffalo Bills. And when was the last time Buffalo had a winning team. But with Foster they don’t have to depend on the passing game. Foster gives them one of the best backs in the league. He had 109 yards on 20 carries in their most recent loss, 33-28 to the Colts. For the season he’s among the NFL leaders with 573 yards on 106 carries. But when they have to go to the air the Johnson boys give them two of the best receivers in the NFL. Andre has 34 catches for 449 yards, and DeAndre Johnson has 25 catches for 366 yards. Andre is a beast. In short they can score points. But their strength over the years has been their defense, and even though the Colts scored 33 punts on them, their strength is still their defense. The Steelers will have to work for everything they get and will have to score 20 or more points to beat this team.Last weekend the Browns beat the Steelers in every aspect of the game to post the 31-10 victory, despite having terrible stats. The Steelers racked up the stats in passing and rushing but could not take the ball in for touchdowns when in the red zone.Brian Hoyer had only 217 yards passing going only 8 of 17 but Ben Tate had 78 yards on 25 carries on the ground and Isaiah Crowell had 77 on 11 carries. In comparison to Ben Roethlisberger who was 21 of 42 for 228 yards, Antonio Brown had 7 catches for 116 yards and Le’Veon Bell had 82 yards on 18 carries. The Steelers problem is play calling when they get in the red zone. They run when they should be passing and pass when they should be running. On second and short you use your big back, not trick plays. Blount is rarely in the game on short yardage and when he is they don’t use him. In their next three games the Steelers are going to have to score touchdowns and stop settling for field goals especially against the Colts and Ravens. At one time Andrew Luck was considered to be one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. Well now he’s one of the best in the league period. He was 25 of 44 for 370 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Colts win over the Texans and he has 1867 yards passing and 17 touchdown passes. He has two great receivers to pass to in Reggie Wayne 34 catches for 419 yards and T. Y. Hilton 40 catches for 604 yards. And they have a solid ground game with Ahmad Bradshaw, and Trent Richardson. Their defense is still suspect, but not many teams can score with the Colts. The Ravens have been a surprise in how productive the offense has been behind quarterbacks Joe Flacco coming off a 48-17 bombing of the Tampa Bay Bucs. And even though the Cincinnati Bengals have lost one and tied one in their last two games they are still the team to beat in the AFC North. The current AFC North standing: Bengals 3-1-1, Ravens 4-2, Browns 3-2 and Steelers 3-3.This weeks’ schedule: Steelers home against the Texans, Browns at Jacksonville, Bengals at Indianapolis and the Atlanta Falcons at Baltimore.Projected winners are: Steelers, Browns, Ravens and Bengals.last_img read more
