SA supports firm stance in Africa

first_img28 June 2005South Africa would support military action against Rwanda’s former Hutu-dominated militia, the Interahamwe, should the armed forces derail the peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).In addition, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council recommends armed action to neutralise the militia, Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad told journalists in Pretoria this week.Pahad said the prospects of peace in the DRC would remain poor unless the Interahamwe problem was addressed.“If you don’t deal with the Interahamwe you will never achieve peace in the DRC”, Pahad said. “If political action does not work it would be important to take military action, and South Africa would fully support such an action.”Pahad said South Africa had been working closely with the people of the DRC to ensure peace in the troubled country, and that the elections scheduled for 30 October were held in a stable political environment.“Before any election can take place, the demobilisation of former rebel movements, including Interahamwe, is crucial,” Pahad said. “However, the withdrawal of the militia from the peace process is causing a delay in the demobilisation process and is also creating an unstable political climate.”On the political situation in Ivory Coast, Pahad said South Africa was asked by the African Union to try to unblock the peace process in that country.“We will review the Pretoria Agreement and identify the stumbling blocks in the implementation of the agreement”, the deputy minister told journalists.“After the Pretoria Agreement, which was signed by the warring sides, we have seen no progress in the implementation of the peace process. We would like to see the legislative process completed and the disarmament process begin.”President Thabo Mbeki is currently hosting another round of peace talks in Pretoria with key leaders of Cote D’Ivoire.Pahad said that while South Africa would do its best to ensure an amicable solution to that country’s problems, strong measures could be taken against those standing in the way of peace.“The possibility of sanctions to anyone obstructing the Pretoria Agreement is a reality,” he said.Pahad said South Africa would continue its conflict resolution mission in the continent’s hot spots. The United Nations Security Council has extended the UN operation in the Ivory Coast until 24 January 2006, following the unanimous adoption of Resolution 1609 (2005).“South Africa and Africa will not prosper if there are conflicts on the continent,” Pahad said. “We cannot achieve the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) goals if there is continued instability on the continent.“It is within this context that South Africa assumes a leading role in resolving conflicts in Africa.”Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Fertilizer Applicator Certification Training continues

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest We are still getting a lot of questions about Fertilizer Certification from farmers. Yes, this new regulation applies to you. You, being almost every farmer in Ohio. You have until September 30, 2017 to become certified to apply fertilizer. While there are exceptions, most of these exceptions would only apply to a very small farmer such as one who has 50 acres or less. This site gives more details on the legal issues: http://aglaw.osu.edu/blog-categories/environmental.For the purposes of this Training, “fertilizer” means anything with an N-P-K analysis — meaning yes this includes nitrogen if the co-op applies everything else and you only apply sidedress N. And if you take manure from a concentrated animal feeding facility — a great opportunity by the way — then yes you too need to be certified to apply that manure.Record keeping requirements start when you receive you yellow Fertilizer Applicator Certificate. Within 24 hours of any nutrient application, you must record: Name of fertilizer certificate holder Name of applicator working under direct supervision of certificate holder (if any) Date of application Location (field ID, farm) Fertilizer analysis (such as 11-52-0) Rate of fertilizer application (lbs/A) and total amount applied Fertilizer application method (surface-applied, incorporated, etc) Soil conditions For surface applications only: is ground frozen or snow covered? Temperature and precipitation during application Weather forecast for day following application. And you must keep those records of your nutrient application for three years. One very good place to get and print off weather records and a forecast is http://weather.gov.To find a program for this month – check at http://nutrienteducation.osu.edu. At this same website you may also get more information on the education program Ohio State University delivers and some clarification on the regulations from the Ohio Department of Agriculture.last_img read more

Why Asians Rule YouTube

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#web#YouTube A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Last June, in a panel celebrating diversity at Vidcon, the unofficial YouTubers conference, rapper Timothy DeLaGhetto suggested the main reason for his popularity on the site: He’s “an Asian guy doing normal things.” (DeLaGhetto ranks #53 with 1.4 million subscribers and 465 million total views.)“Here’s a group of people that are not traditionally represented elsewhere,” said filmmaker and musician Freddie Wong in an interview. “We didn’t have a Blaxsploitation moment, and the closest we got was Bruce Lee and Kung Fu.” Ranking #6 on the YouTube chart with 1-plus million views of each of his videos, Wong mostly makes geeky and guntastic shorts, though he recently expanded to a Web series format with Video Game High School. Fact: Asians rule YouTube. After decades of stereotypical roles as brainiacs and kung fu masters, the long underrepresented group is flexing its media muscles online. Of the top 10 personalities on YouTube, three are Asian, occupying the second, sixth, and 10th spots respectfully. The top 10 women also include three Asians.Long ostracized from mainstream television, Asians have taken advantage of YouTube’s low barrier to entry to create their own opportunities and their own characters. From rappers to sketch-comedy stars to make-up artists, they can be whatever they want. YouTube even has a Korean equivalent of TV’s Jersey Shore called K-Town, broadcast on Kevin Smith’s LOUD channel. In fact, Hollywood directors and actors now vie to work with him or appear in his YouTube shorts.“We are [on YouTube] doing our thing and it works because we’re doing our thing,” Wong said. “We’re not trying to fulfill or reject any given stereotype. This is where our platform is, and it will be a matter of time before traditional media realizes the value of representation across demographics.” Kim Evey, a Korean-American actress who now works as a producer with Felicia Day, joined the YouTube community after seeing a viral video of two  Asians lip-syncing. She recalls only three Asians in media when she was growing up: “Connie Chung, who was a news reporter; a woman on a sitcom called Night Court; and then there was M*A*S*H. That was it if you were Asian and wanted to be an actor.” She is blown away by what is happening on YouTube today. “The fact that they do exist, and have the success that they have, is so exciting to me.”Bernie Su, a Web series writer of hit shows like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, said “as an Asian American, I am proud and happy to see” Asians at the top of the list of popular YouTubers. “Asian Americans don’t have a lot of rolemodels” in traditional media right now, he adds.“The Asian American audience is relevant,” Su said, “and when Hollywood and advertisers realize how relevant they are, they’ll pretty much have to see Asian-American stars.” fruzsina eordogh Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…last_img read more
